JUST BUKOWSKI

Many people know Henry Charles Bukowski, almost everything he told and explained himself-in books, everything else was told by his friends or girls. After the book “Interview: the Sun, here I am” questions should be dropped even for the most meticulous fans of the book. But… It turns out that there is still a sufficient amount of material hidden beyond direct perception. This is clearly demonstrated by John Dulligan’s two-hour documentary “Bukowski”. How many good pre-documentary biographical films are there that last more than an hour? Here we are dealing with a pleasant exception. A lot, of course, adds to the Director’s piggy Bank and the fact that the movie in this format and with such a hero was born at all.

Admit it, have you ever wanted to see that crazy Linda from “Women”? The prototype, of course. What about Bukowski’s daughter, who was already featured in the post Office, Book’s first novel? And the main (or, more correctly, the last) love of Charles-Linda Lee? And also… An impressive number of readers still have one unresolved question: young Bukowski – was he really like that?.. Wasn’t Henry Charles born at forty, with a cigarette in his mouth and a bottle of port in his hand? Even on the Internet, great and powerful, it is almost impossible to find photos of Bukowski as a young man or as a child. But in the film they are (some of them can be seen on this page).

What else to say about the film by Dulligan… It is essentially similar to the book “Interview: the Sun, here I am”, but unlike many similar cases, they do not duplicate, but complement each other, almost like two halves of one whole. By the way, the book and the film were released in the same year – 2003, ten years ago, when the trees were big and Jerome Salinger was still alive.

The film consists of interviews with Bukowski at various times, interviews with his friends, girls, colleagues, wife, daughter; the audience is also shown video footage from literary readings of Bukowski, his rare photos, and newspaper publications. About friends, I would like to say separately: in addition to the usual characters of Bukowski’s books (already real), we will meet people like Tom waits, Bono, Sean Penn… Do you think they are here “for a tick”, to say two words and flash in the credits, as it often happens in Russian documentaries? Not at all! Bono, among other things, will even read a poem by Bukowski, such a good fellow.

Dulligan’s work is really good. The film” Bukowski”, oddly enough, leaves behind a feeling of Bukowski-real, honest, drunk and grinning, looking at you from the screen. That’s what he was.
